Most of us know the immune system exists and vaguely understand that it fights disease. Beyond that, it is a fog. Philipp Dettmer, the founder of the Kurzgesagt YouTube channel, set out to clear the fog with Immune, published in 2021 — and the result is one of the most lucid accounts of a biological system you are likely to find.

Dettmer's core distinction is between the innate and the adaptive immune systems. The innate system is fast and general: it responds immediately to any sign of intrusion, using physical barriers, chemical signals and a standing army of cells that attack anything that looks foreign. The adaptive system is slower but devastatingly precise: it learns the specific signature of a pathogen, builds a targeted response, and — crucially — remembers it for next time. Vaccination works by triggering this memory without the danger of the real infection.

The book is also clear-headed about what goes wrong. Allergies are the immune system attacking harmless substances as though they were threats. Autoimmune conditions are the system attacking the body's own tissue. Dettmer explains that 'boosting' the immune system, a phrase found on the label of countless products, is not merely unproven — an immune response too strong is itself dangerous, causing the collateral damage we call inflammation.

What makes Immune memorable is its insistence on scale. The encounters it describes happen at a level of smallness almost impossible to picture — millions of cells, proteins and signals coordinating in ways that would defeat the most sophisticated human engineering. The book leaves you with a persistent, slightly awed awareness of the invisible complexity keeping you alive.
